The following policies are set forth for rental of the outdoor deck at Playhouse in the Park and the group agrees to abide by these policies.

Rental Procedure: All deck rentals will be handled through the Playhouse in the Park office by calling 270-759-1752 or emailing playhousemurrayky@gmail.com. All rental fees must be submitted with signed Playhouse in the Park Deck Rental Request Form to reserve the meeting space.

Cancellations: No penalty if written notice is provided 72 hours prior to meeting date. Cancellation less than 72 hours will be assessed a 50% administrative fee. No refunds if cancellation is less than 48 hours from scheduled function. A full refund, less applicable cancellation fees, will be mailed to Group upon cancellation.

Facility set up: Area is set up with five picnic tables. Rental of any additional tables or chairs will be the responsibility of the Group and are not available through Playhouse in the Park.

Clean-up: Group is responsible for the cleanliness of the deck upon conclusion of event. There are two trash cans located on the deck area. All trash must be placed in trash cans and then taken to the dumpster located near the caboose. Replacement trash bags will be at the bottom of each trash can; a fresh bag should be put in once trash is removed. Absolutely no food is to be left on the deck. 

Liability Waiver: In consideration of renting this facility for an event, Group holds harmless and releases Playhouse in the Park from all liability and waives the right to sue Playhouse in the Park, their employees, officers, volunteers, and agents from any and all claims, including claims of negligence, resulting in any physical injury, illness (including death) or economic loss that is suffered as a result from participation in this event, travel to and from the event, or any other occurrences incidental to the event.

Miscellaneous:

  • No smoking is allowed in or around the facility. No Alcohol is permitted in the Park.

  • Bathrooms are located across the parking lot near the Schoolhouse Pavilion.

  • The Playhouse Deck is available from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

  • A Playhouse representative will be “on call” during all events. Contact information will be provided prior to the event.


HISTORY OF THE PLAYHOUSE:

The Murray-Calloway County Community theatre was founded January 1977, and in May of the same year, the theatre incorporated as a nonprofit organization and elected its first Board of Directors. The Board immediately began looking for a permanent home. They inquired about the old Murray Freight Depot—an unused, dilapidated building owned by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. This began a 2 ½ year cooperative effort on the part of city officials, county officials, and members of the theatre board to obtain the depot as a home for community theatre.

The depot was moved to its location in the Murray-Calloway County Park in the fall of 1979. In June 1980, the depot opened with “Wizard of Oz.” After three years of “wandering around town,” the Murray-Calloway County Theatre had a home—the Playhouse in the Park. Since that time, the theatre has produced numerous performances in the depot and has continued expanding its educational services, sponsoring the Box of Frogs Youth Theatre Group, holding classes for the community, traveling to schools in the city and county, and hosting an annual Summer Theatre Camp.
